Mosaic Artists of Canada is pleased to announce the launch of Mosaic Conversations, a new series exclusively for MAC/AMC members that will explore a variety of topics related to the art, practice, and community of mosaics. This is an opportunity for mosaic artists and enthusiasts from across the country to come together, to share and learn from one another, and to hear the stories behind the work. MAC will host Mosaic Conversations every three months, on the second Wednesday of the month, details and Zoom links will be shared with members by email.

Our first Mosaic Conversation will take place on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. ET (8:00 p.m. Atlantic | 6:00 p.m. Central | 5:00 p.m. Mountain | 4:00 p.m. Pacific) via Zoom and will feature Ursula Neufeld.

For our first webinar, A Long-Time Mosaic Project: Little Lost Souls, Reconciliation and Hope, Manitoba mosaic artist Ursula Neufeld will share the story of a project that, in her words, “would not let go of me until it was completed.” At the centre of Ursula’s presentation is a large-scale reconciliation mural created with children, families and community members to remember the children who died in Canada’s residential school system and to explore hopes for the future through children’s minds, hands and imaginations.

Ursula will share the journey behind the mural: the Indigenous families and Elder who guided the work, the mosaics created by students, the story of the children’s spirits dancing in the Northern Lights and the enormous braided heart representing children’s hopes for reconciliation. She’ll also talk about the practical side of bringing an ambitious community mosaic to life, including funding and the use of custom glass tiles made in Canada.

But the story starts well before this mural.

Ursula will take us through some of the projects, experiments and occasional funny results that shaped her practice as a community artist (from her experiences at the Chicago Mosaic School to projects involving science, the community of Churchill and the Northern Lights) and show how those experiences eventually came together in a project that became deeply personal to her.
